In June 2008, on a nature reserve in Italy near Florence, a single- horned deer was spotted. This is a miracle of nature!

According to researchers, this single horn phenomenon is rather rare but not unheard of! The image above is the recently discovered one-year old unicorn-deer. Below is an image of another unicorn-deer, a full size male with antlers as well as a center horn!

The Avenging Unicorn Playset

Upon my reading adventures I stumbled across a neat little gift idea for a friend with a super sense of humour! It is called the "Unicorn Avenging Playset" Wow! Hahaha! This looks like it would probably be a good time for the entire family aside from the BLOOD AND GORE. The idea is clever...however, I do hope that the next Unicorn Playset to be released is a little more magical and a little less demoralizing to the unicorn breed. This sure gave me a chuckle, especially the fact that the set includes several interchangeable horns... different colours and textures... hahahaha--- Enjoy!

THE ELAND

This relative of the unicorn family is called the eland. It has two long horns that extend upwards. This African animal is associated with magic often because of its raw muscular power. It is able to kill lions and other large animals so some South Africans believed that there must be a spiritual deity helping this animal.

Narwhals are very real creatures that have an extremely lengthy tusk or horn that protrudes outward just above their mouths. These creatures are a breed of whale and therefore and bound to water. They are extremely social and intellectual beings.

Unicorns and Narwhals are distant relatives. I guess some of you readers may not believe this since one beast is land-ridden while the other frolics in the open waters; however, this is truth! Unicorns and Narwhals both evolved from another horned animal that was both land and water compatible. Somewhere, many many many generations back, there was a error in mating and two separate beings were created, both horned, but were either only land or only water compatible.

Nevertheless, for as long as can be documented, Unicorns and Narwhals have been hunted, murdered and robbed of their horns. It was believed that their horns contained magical powers that gave owner's great advantages in life.

west, it was thought to have magical properties, and could purify poisons.

Therefore, it was a very valuable commodity to have.  Pope Paul III is said
to have paid 12,000 pieces of gold for one, but James I of England got a
much better deal for his, only paying 10,000 pounds Sterling for one.  The
horn of the narwhal was a common substitute for that of the unicorn for
those unscrupulous businessmen.

 Because of that problem, a common test to determine the validity of a
unicorn horn was to use its magical properties of purification.  David De
Pomis wrote, 'There is very little of the true horn to be found, most of
that which is sold as such being either stag's horn, or elephant's tusk.  A
true test by which one may know the genuine horn from the false:  Place the
horn in a vessel of any sort of material you like, and with it three or
four large and live scorpions, keeping the vessel covered.  If you find
four hours later that the scorpions are dead or almost lifeless, the horn
is a good one, and there is not enough money in the world to pay for it'.

Well, well, well! What have we got here? It looks impeccably creative! Here's what I think:

Positives: What a beauty! The use of colour is absolutely stunning and the detail in the picture is unbelievable! This artist is far beyond her years. The talent is simply remarkable; it radiates off the drawing. Great work little one...keep it up!

Negatives: Two aspects of the drawing stand out as negatives. First, the unicorn is missing a leg! I am sure one can see how this would create mobility problems for the unicorn. Secondly, there is a bow and arrow being pointed in the direction of the unicorns face! It could be a messy result!

Positives: The appealing parts of this drawing are very limited. The sun in the background is a nice touch. It may make some of the viewers feel warm and fuzzy inside. As well, the blue sky depicts a land that is pollution free. Wonderful attempt!

Negatives: I will number my complaints of the picture. First, a unicorn is supposed to sport a horn not a party hat looking creation. Second, it just doesn't look like a unicorn at all. It resembles a mutated version of ET with four legs. Third, is there a piece of poop in the picture? Disgusting. Fourth, my depth perception may be off...but is the "unicorn" floating above the water?

Many types of horns were sold as unicorn horns, which were highly sought-after as a defence against poison. One of many references is Ctesias's reports on the unicorn (or perhaps the rhinoceros) in India:

Those who drink out of cups made from [the horn] are proof against convulsions, epilepsy, and even poison, provided that before or after having taken it they drink some wine or water or other liquid out of these cups.^[2]

The ability of unicorn horns to neutralize poison has been touted since the time of Aristotle.^[3] The English ambassador to the French court was treated in 1596 with medicine containing "musk, amber, gold, pearl and unicorn’s horn", the efficacy of the ingredients being directly related to their rarity and expense.^[4]

Positives: This one has some great features! For example, the artistry really captures the unicorn's athletic side. It must have been jumping at least four feet in order to clear that fire!

Negatives: This drawing fails to capture the unicorn's true disposition. The unicorn depicted in this picture looks tired, miserable, depressed and indifferent to the fact he is jumping over a raging fire! It is a proven fact that unicorns are independent, confident, bright creatures that would never stoop to shallow levels like jumping over a potentially lethal fire.

A unicorn's white colouring makes it a natural symbol for purity, chastity and virginity. The horn of the unicorn was the weapon of the faithful and of Christ. The mythological unicorn is a symbol of chivalry with qualities befitting to this status, proud and untamable.

As far as modern fantasy literature for children is concerned, a mention of unicorns is in "Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone". The bad guy uses it to prolong his life by a drinking a little amount of the unicorn’s silver blood.

I found more evidence to support the theory that unicorns actually have magic powers. It sounds like they can be ferocious little things if you mess with them...so please, leave them be!!

It was traditionally believed that a naked virgin sitting beneath a tree could only catch a delicate unicorn. The unicorn, who craves purity, would be irresistably drawn to the woman and it would lie down and even place its head in her lap. While it slept in this manner it would give a hunter an opportunity to capture it. If, however, the girl was merely pretending to be a virgin the unicorn would tear her apart in a fit of rage.

Throughout the legends of unicorns, horns and alicorns, there is one constant: the horn is said to have great medicinal powers. In Ctesias’ writings, the dust filed from the horn of a unicorn was supposed to protect against deadly diseases if mixed into a potion and consumed. If you drank from the horn itself, you would be protected against any poison in the world.

The origin of unicorns is a wishy-washy subject...nobody knows for SURE how they came to be but here are a few speculations:

[Num 23:22 & 24:8]; The warlike fierceness of the unicorn is referred to when Ephraim and Manasseh are described as being like the horns of unicorns. [Deu 33:17]; The terrifying destruction of Idumea is completed when God sends unicorns and wild bulls to attack the people. [Isa 34:8 see also Psa. 92:10 & Psa 22:21]

Modern zoologists have generally disbelieved the existence of the unicorn. Yet there are animals bearing on their heads a bony protuberance more or less like a horn, which may have given rise to the story. The rhinoceros horn, as it is called, is such a protuberance, though it does not exceed a few inches in height, and is far from agreeing with the descriptions of the horn of the unicorn. The nearest approach to a horn in the middle of the forehead is exhibited in the bony protuberance on the forehead of the giraffe; but this also is short and blunt, and is not the only horn of the animal, but a third horn, standing in front of the two others.

Other believes that the narwhales, along with the Indian Rhinoceros (which only has one ‘horn’) are creatures that, through travelers’ exaggerations, became the fabled unicorn. The narwhale is a whale that has a single tusk protruding from its forehead. One can admire two carved narwhal horn in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and in the National Museums and Galleries on Merseyside (NMGM); the two are thought to be a pair. The horn is 110 cm long with a diameter of 5.2 cm tapering to 2.5 cm.

The Oryx, a desert antilope, is also a potential candidate.

The Woolly Rhinoceros would have been quite familiar to ice age people, or the legend may have been based on the surviving rhinoceroses of Africa. Europeans and West Asians have visited Sub-Saharan Africa for as long as we have records.

Chinese people from the time of the Han Dynasty had also visited East Africa, which may account for their odd legends of 'one-horned ogres'. The Ming Dynasty voyages of Zheng He brought back giraffes, which were identified by the Chinese with another creature from their own legends, the Qilin, a deer-like creature sometimes also depicted with a single horn.

This man as gone above and beyond in showing his pride toward the beautiful land beast. His tattoo was not only incredibly expensive but it was also staggeringly painful--to some the pain is worth it! This man has no embarrassments with his dedication to a nearly-forgotten mammal species and he is frequently seen frolicking half-naked. He is truly special and is wonderfully spreading the pride and the power of the unicorn.

Wonderous Sighting in India Desert

This unicorn was galloping through the desert near Jaisalmer, India about 3 years ago. A US reporter, covering a completely unrelated story, happened to catch this beauty from the window of her donkey-drawn carriage with her telephoto lens. She was quoted saying, "this is the best day of my life". No duh.
